The Brazilian hospital ship Abaré (German: the friend) has been sailing the Rio Tapajós since 2006 to provide its services to patients who would not have access to the health system due to the remote location of their homes . Two doctors, two dentists and eight nurses work in the “floating hospital”. Its facilities include four treatment rooms, a pharmacy and a small operating room .

The ship runs to different berths on a regular monthly basis. The Tapajós is a navigable right tributary of the Amazon .
