Abbo (Bishop of Maguelone)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abbo († shortly after 897) officiated as Bishop of Maguelone in the second half of the 9th century . His exact term of office is not known.

Abbo, who succeeded Maldomer as Bishop of Maguelone, signed a privilege granted to the Benedictine Abbey of Tournus at the council held in Chalon-sur-Saône in 875 . In 877 he met Pope John VIII , who had landed in Provence , at whose request he attended the coronation of King Ludwig II of West Franconia on December 8, 877 in Compiègne . Then he accompanied the Pope to the Council of Troyes, which began on August 11, 878 .

Abbo is later mentioned as a participant in two small regional synods that took place on November 17, 887 and April 19, 897 in the small village of Notre Dame du Port , on the border of the dioceses of Nîmes and Maguelone. The latter synod, presided over by Archbishop Arnust von Narbonne, was convened because of complaints from the priest Adalfred, responsible for the parish of Saint Jean de Cocon, that Abbo had embezzled part of the tithe in favor of the newly built Saint-Andoque church. Adalfred was right on the matter. Soon after, Abbos died, whereupon Gontier took over his episcopate.
