Maguelone (rarely also Maguelonne) was one of the "seven cities" that are said to be the origin of the name of the Septimania region . Septimania was the western region of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis , which was under the control of the Visigoth Kingdom when Septimania was ceded to Theodoric II , king of the Visigoths, in 462 . The seven cities are today's Elne , Agde , Narbonne , Lodève , Béziers , Nimes and Maguelone.

At first Maguelone was the fortress of a Visigoth nobleman in higher elevations, protected by coastal lagoons , then it became a bishopric. When the early history of Maguelone was compiled by Abbe Gariel in 1583 ( Histoire des évêques de Maguelonne ), he provided the bishopric with an apostolic origin, as was the case for every long -established diocese in late antiquity in all three Gaul de rigeur . The first historical bishop of Maguelone helped at the Council of Narbonne in 589; no doubt the Christian community was much older. In the 8th century, the Almohad Welsh conquered the area, which was finally recaptured by Charles Martel in 737, but the fighting that lasted for decades depopulated the entire region. The diocese was moved to Substantion (Melgueil), but Bishop Arnaud (1030-1060) returned, rebuilt the destroyed sanctuary and built a bridge to connect Maguelone with the "new district" Villeneuve. The Romanesque cathedral of St-Pierre-et-St-Paul de Maguelone , which was designed as a fortified church and is dedicated to the apostles Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus , was built together with extensive monastery buildings as a bishopric. Towards the middle of the 16th century it was officially moved to Montpellier.

  • The Romanesque, former cathedral of St-Pierre-et-St-Paul de Maguelone , which is located on an offshore island, is famous .
  • Mount of Madeleine: scrubland, military area, ruins of the Saint-Baudille crypt on the summit (185 m) and steles commemorating the resistance fighters who were shot here in World War II .
