Abbott Island is an uninhabited island in the Palmer Archipelago off the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula , about two kilometers west of Davis Island in the southern section of Bouquet Bay in the northwest of the Brabant Island .
It was roughly mapped by participants in the French Antarctic Expedition from 1903 to 1905 under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . A more detailed mapping was carried out in 1959 using aerial photographs by Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd. between 1956 and 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the island after the Canadian medic Maude Abbott (1869-1940).
