As Abbreviation (lat "abbreviatio".: Abbreviation ) is referred to in zoology the shortening of the individual development of an individual by the elimination of individual stages of development . Particularly well known in this context is the neoteny or Fetalisation individual Schwanzlurcharten such as the axolotl . These retain characteristics of the larval stages such as the outer gills for life , but become sexually mature at this stage of development. The opposite of abbreviation is prolongation .

The term also appears in the formal language of art history. Sometimes a window or a door stand for the whole building or a few flowers for a whole flower meadow.

In literature, a ship or a multi-room building can sometimes mean an entire state structure.
