Abigail “Abby” Sunderland (born October 19, 1993 in Thousand Oaks , California ) is an American sailor who tried in 2010 to become the youngest person to complete a solo circumnavigation . When Sunderland circled Cape Horn on March 31, 2010 , she was the youngest solo sailor to ever undertake this venture. Her brother Zac Sunderland was the first minor to complete a circumnavigation of the world .

Sunderland originally took off from Marina del Rey, California with their boat Wild Eyes on January 23, 2010 , but had to stop in Cabo San Lucas , Mexico . She started another attempt at circumnavigation on February 6, 2010, during which she wanted to sail to and from Cabo San Lucas solo, without stopping and without outside help. Problems with the autopilot forced Sunderland in Cape Town to stop to make repairs. This ended her attempt to circumnavigate the world without stopping. Nevertheless, she still had a chance of becoming the youngest female circumnavigator.

When she was sailing in heavy and windy waters in a remote area in the Indian Ocean on June 10, 2010 , her sailboat lost its mast and she activated two alarm buoys, triggering a search operation. She was rescued two days later, almost 5 months after she set sail in Marina del Rey.

She posted plans to write and publish a book about her trip. After being rescued, Sunderland said she would make another attempt to circumnavigate the world.

On December 31, 2018, Sunderland's boat was spotted off Kangaroo Island . A rescue was not undertaken.
