Riebelsdorf , a village with 783 inhabitants (as of March 2010), has been a district of Neukirchen in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse since December 31, 1971 .

location

The village is located a few kilometers southwest of Ziegenhain on the southern edge of the Schwalmgrund on the old Messestraße from Cologne to Leipzig , today the federal highway 454 . The district covers approx. 865 hectares. The Grenff flowing through the village flows further west into the Schwalm near the neighboring municipality of Loshausen .

history

Riebelsdorf was first mentioned as Rivelstorph in a document from the Haina monastery in 1266 , when Arnold von Rückershausen transferred half the mill and some goods in the village to the monastery to settle its debts. In later documents the place name appears as Rivelisdorph (1267), Reybilsdorf (1305), Rybelsdorf (1331), Ribelsdorf (1343), Riboldisdorf (1364/67), Riebelsdorff (1585) and Ribbelsdorf (1660). On a map of the county of Ziegenhain 1705-1715, the place Rübelsdorf was named. In addition to the Haina monastery, the Hersfeld Abbey also owned considerable property in Riebelsdorf; The Augustinian Choir Women Monastery Immichenhain also acquired land there. The place belonged to the county of Ziegenhain and until about 1360/1367 to the court on the Wasen , then to the court of Neukirchen .

With the end of the county of Ziegenhain in 1450, the place, like the entire county, came to the Landgraviate of Hesse , but remained administratively under the Neukirchen office. During the time of the short-lived Kingdom of Westphalia (1807–1813), the village was part of the canton of Neukirchen before it came back to the office of Neukirchen with the restoration of the Electorate of Hesse-Kassel . With the administrative reform in Hessen-Kassel, Riebelsdorf became part of the new Ziegenhain district in 1821 . From 1848 to 1851 it belonged to the Fritzlar district , but when it was dissolved it came back to the Ziegenhain district (from 1939 Ziegenhain district). It stayed that way until the Hessian regional reform of 1974, when the district of Ziegenhain merged into the newly formed Schwalm-Eder district . On December 31, 1971, Riebelsdorf was incorporated into the city of Neukirchen.

In March 1617 a fire destroyed 21 houses, 15 barns and some stables together with the stored crops, 5 horses, as well as cattle, sheep and pigs within a short time.

Battle on Riebelsdorfer Berg

During the Thirty Years' War on November 15, 1640, a few hundred meters northwest of the village, the bloody battle on Riebelsdorfer Berg between Saxon-Weimar troops under Colonel Reinhold von Rosen , reinforced by a French battalion of Duke Henri von Orléans-Longueville and the Ziegenhain Citizens Corps on the one hand and imperial troops under General Hans Rudolf von Breda on the other hand, in which the numerically superior imperials suffered a defeat and Breda and 300 of his people lost their lives. According to tradition, Breda was killed by a shot by Captain Velten (Valentin) Muhly , butcher and commander of the Ziegenhain vigilante group founded in 1539, which was responsible for the fortress watch in peace. In 1843 Ziegenhain citizens erected an obelisk on the B 454 at the point where Breda fell ; Since then, there has been a slender stone pillar at the place where Velten Muhly is said to have shot at Breda. The so-called Breda sword of the general is kept in the town hall of Ziegenhain.

750 years of Riebelsdorf

750 years after the first known documentary mention in 1266, the anniversary of the village was celebrated from June 3rd to 5th, 2016. Organized by the newly founded association “Our Riebelsdorf eV”, an appropriate festival program was created. On Friday, June 3, 2016, a Festkommers was held, which was rounded off with a dance with background music. On Saturday we danced and celebrated with the Beatles cover band Rubber-Soul and Wheat Snake. The highlight of the anniversary weekend was a standing pageant on Sunday, June 5, 2016, which brought tradition and modernity of the village into harmony. With over 100 exhibitors, two stages and numerous food stands, the visitors were welcomed on the main road through Riebelsdorf. One of the highlights of Sunday was the battle on Riebelsdorfer Berg. The battle was re-enacted by the Landau shooting guild and attracted thousands of visitors to Riebelsdorf.

Protestant church

In the middle of the village is the medieval church in the middle of a walled churchyard with a beautiful portal. Since the Reformation it has been used as a place of worship by the evangelical community. The west tower dates from the end of the 15th century, the nave was renewed in 1799, as evidenced by the five-line building inscription above the over-port of the south portal. The mighty church tower with the entrance as well as the interior of the church were extensively renovated in the years 1996-1998. There are beautiful sandstone work inside the church. On the south side of the tower there is a sculpture of the enthroned bishop Nicholas, which refers to the pre-Reformation patronage of the church.

Bakehouse

The bakery , built around the middle of the 19th century, is still in use; around 20 families still bake bread and sell some of it for themselves. In addition to bread , sheet cakes and cookies are also baked. The bakehouse has become a tourist attraction. On working days you can watch bread baking the old way and then try the bread by prior arrangement.

Model airfield

On a hilltop, the Sprenzig , also called Höhe 309, above the village there is a model airfield set up and operated by the Riebelsdorf Model Aviation Club, which allows take-offs and landings in all directions.

Knüllwaldbahn cycle path

With the opening of the Knüllwaldbahn from Treysa to Bad Hersfeld on July 31, 1907, Riebelsdorf became a stop on this route. On June 1, 1984, passenger traffic on the route between Oberaula and Treysa was discontinued, and freight traffic on August 31, 1995. In the summer of 2007, the expansion of the first section of the Knüllwaldbahn cycle path (R11) (part of the European cycle path D4) began on the former railway line for nine kilometers from Riebelsdorf to Lenzenmühle near Kleinropperhausen , which was released for use in April 2008. In September 2009 the section from Lenzenmühle to Wahlshausen was also released.
