history

Barn from Asterode in the Hessenpark open-air museum

The village was first mentioned in documents in 1240. In 1845 the old church that was in the cemetery collapsed . Five years later it was rebuilt on a hill in the middle of the village.

In 1928 the manor districts of Forst Neukirchen and Forst Immichenhain were incorporated into Asterode. On December 31, 1971, Asterode was incorporated into Neukirchen as part of the regional reform in Hesse .

Place name

In surviving documents, Asterode was mentioned under the following names (the year it was mentioned in brackets): Astenrode (around 1240), Astinrode (1343), Astenrode (1360/1367), Asterode (1364/1367), Asterodt (1750).

Swastika in the forest

The village became the subject of national and foreign media reports from the year 2000, when larch plantings from the 1930s in the form of a swastika in a pine forest in the Brandenburg town of Zernikow sparked discussions. In this context it became public that at that time in a spruce forest in front of Asterode the number "1933" - the year Adolf Hitler came to power - and a huge swastika symbol with larches had been planted. The symbol was to be removed as early as the 1960s following complaints from American soldiers. However, the following forest work was insufficiently carried out. According to the responsible forest director a. D. Bernhard von Strenge, the swastika and number remained recognizable, which only changed after a storm in 1990.
