Christerode is a district of the city of Neukirchen in the Schwalm-Eder district in Hesse .

geography

Christerode is located on the western edge of the Knüllgebirge . The Schwalm joins in the west . Christerode is about 3.5 km east of the core town of Neukirchen. The next largest cities are Kassel (about 50 kilometers north), Marburg (about 40 kilometers west), Fulda (about 40 kilometers south-east) and Bad Hersfeld (about 25 kilometers east).

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1330. The document contained the sale of a "good located in the village of Christinrade" from Konrad von Reckerode to Count Johann von Ziegenhain , who received the mill at Hausen as a fief . In 1981 the 650th anniversary was celebrated.

The village probably owes its origin to a fortress on the nearby Burgberg (Kristenstein), which offered protection to the residents of the surrounding villages.

A widespread legend leads the place name Christerode back to the four brothers Christian, Adolf, Friedrich and Albert , who are said to have founded the villages of Christerode, Olberode, Friedigerode and Asterode.

On December 31, 1971, Christerode was incorporated into the city of Neukirchen.

Culture and sights

church

The Christeroder church belongs to the parish of Olberode. The oldest parts of the current building date from the Middle Ages , parts of the foundation possibly from the Romanesque . The church is a simple hall structure, the ceiling of which rests on a single, mighty oak column over a longitudinal beam. The interior contains benches, the altar and the raised pulpit and a tier with the organ and other benches. A few years ago the building was classified as in danger of collapse, so it had to be extensively renovated. During this time the services took place in the Christeroder village community center . The organ, built by organ builder Peter Battenberg around 1912, was also restored in 2001. On the outside wall of the church there are three memorial plaques on which the names of Christians or Christians who were missing and fallen in wars can be read.

waterfall

Christer or waterfall

Where the Buchenbach stream squeezes into a shady, narrow gorge between the rocks, there has always been a natural waterfall. Directly in front of it, stones began to be mined for road construction in a small basalt quarry in the early 1920s. When the business was shut down, the quarry gradually fell into disrepair and was used as a wild garbage dump. With the start of the land reorganization in Christerode in 1971, the plan was drawn up to convert this former quarry into a small pond. An irrigation ditch, which has also fallen into disrepair, was renewed to supply water. This is how today's waterfall was created, which falls into the pond over an 11 m high wall. The waterfall hut was built by the citizens of Christerode themselves. The entire facility was put into operation in 1974 and has been maintained and looked after by the Christerode fishing club ever since.

Leisure and clubs

The following events take place in Christerode every year:

  • At the tent fair, the residents of the village and guests from the neighboring towns meet in the fair tent to dance and get together. It takes place on the third weekend in August.
  • On May 1st, the Christerode fraternity organizes May Day celebrations at the Christeroder waterfall , which is mainly attended by the residents of Christerode and hikers from the surrounding areas.

societies

There are seven clubs in Christerode. Among other things, the volunteer fire brigade and the fraternity .
