Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Aziz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abd al-Aziz ( Arabic عبد الرحمن بن عبد العزيز آل سعود, DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saʿūd ; born in Riyadh in 1931 ; died July 13, 2017) was one of 44 sons of King Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud and, since his mother was Hasa bint Sudairi , belonged to the so-called Sudairi-Seven , to which his brother and later King Fahd ibn Abd al- Aziz counts. As a male descendant of Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud, he had his full surname "ibn Abd al-Aziz Al Saud" .

As the first of the sons of Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud, he studied in the West. In 1978 he replaced his brother Turki ibn Abd al-Aziz as Deputy Defense Minister because he was going abroad, in particular because he had married the daughter of a convicted critic of the regime who refused to accept the " westernization " of the country.

In the international press Chalid ibn Sultan (* 1949) is referred to as Deputy Defense Minister; Formally, he has been "Assistant to the Defense Minister" since 2001 and is the unofficial successor of Abd ar-Rahman.

Prince Abdul Rahman appeared publicly as a pragmatic, traditionally conservative politician. He had accepted the possible claim to the throne of his younger biological brother Prince Naif and had thus stepped down from the line of succession.

Prince Abdul Rahman was particularly interested in racing horses and camels as well as traditional falcon hunting.
