The abdication hall in the cemetery in Brugg

The abdication hall is a listed building in the cemetery of the city of Brugg in the canton of Aargau . The Art Nouveau building is a cultural asset of regional importance .

location

The Rosengarten cemetery complex is located southeast of Brugg's old town on a slope that slopes northeast towards the Aare . At the highest point rises the abdication hall, which, like the entire cemetery, was built in 1904 according to plans by the architect Albert Froelich .

Construction features

The abdication hall in Brugg is the first major construction project that Froelich solved independently. The idiosyncratic, orientalizing structure, which produced the most contradicting judgments as soon as it was built, is regarded as the secessionist prelude to Froelich's cemetery buildings in other cities. In Brugg, the massive building cube towering over a semicircular floor plan dominates the lower-lying cemetery. In the original intention, the bar-like terrace wall in front of the sturdy bossed masonry reinforced this impression, which has been weakened today by ivy growth . The planting of cypress trees already provided for in the designs plays an important role . Here, reflecting the basic shape of the building, they form an impressive, semicircular backdrop. The front of the abdication hall is structured by five high rectangular windows and a squat portal . A continuous cornice made of partly embossed Jura limestone masonry is attached above the windows .

development

The first cemetery expansion took place in 1932 by the horticultural business Fritz & Cie., Zurich. Around 1970/75 a gallery was built into the abdication hall; at that time the window grilles were probably also removed.
