Abdel Moneim Abul Fotuh Abdel Hady ( Arabic عبد المنعم أبو الفتوح عبد الهادي, DMG ʿAbd al-Munʿim Abū al-Futūḥ ʿAbd al-Hādī ; * October 15, 1951 ) is an Egyptian politician. He was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and later became general secretary of the Union of Arab Medicines and chairman of his party, Strong Egypt . Fotuh was a candidate for the 2012 presidential election in Egypt .

Abul Futuh was arrested on February 14, 2018. Human rights organizations accuse the Egyptian government of denying him the necessary medical care.

Early life

Abdel Moneim Abul Fotuh (2012)

Abul Fotuh studied medicine and law at the University of Cairo . He graduated with honors in medicine and a bachelor's degree in law in 1976 . He received his Masters in Hospital Management from Helwan University . During his time at the university, Abul Fotuh was president of the student body in Quasr Aini in 1973 and president of the student body in Cairo in 1975. He later became general secretary of the media committee of all Egyptian universities.

Abul Fotuh was a prominent student leader in the 1970s and campaigned to make it easier for smaller Islamic organizations to join the Brotherhood. As a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, he worked in the leadership for many years and thus became a "most respected member". However, in 2009, at the instigation of the main financier and chief strategist of the Brotherhood Chairat el-Schater , he was voted out of the governing body. When he refused to go without an independent presidential campaign after the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood expelled him.

As president of the student body in Cairo, Abul Fotuh had a famous debate with the then Egyptian statesman Anwar as-Sadat . He cursed Sadat and his followers as "hypocrites". Thereupon Sadat broke off the conversation indignant and angry.

Abul Fotuh was also arrested during the September 1981 arrests, which were targeted against members of Islamist groups. As a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a military court sentenced him to several years in prison. He served this from 1996 to 2001. Before his imprisonment, he worked as an advisor to the Secretary General of the Union of Arab Medicines . After his release he was elected Secretary General of that organization.

Presidential campaign

In the course of the revolution in Egypt in 2011 , Abul Fotuh announced that he would run for the presidential election. However, the Muslim Brotherhood had already announced in advance that it would not run a candidate for president. Brotherhood spokesmen announced that members who volunteered could only do so without the support of the Muslim Brotherhood. Abul Fotuh was then excluded from the organization. The Salafist Party of Light , the Al Wasat Party, and the Egyptian Current Party supported his candidacy. However, in the first round of elections on May 23 and 24, 2012, he only achieved a good 17% of the votes and thus took 4th place among the 13 candidates.

Positions

Abul Fotuh claims that he is trying to bring the ideals of the Koran into harmony with democratic principles. He believes that true power does not come from the law or the constitution , but only from people.
