content

The radio play begins with a description of the setting by the crime novel writer and Nobel Prize winner Maximilian Korbes, who at this point still appears as a first-person narrator.

He receives a visit from Mr. Fürchtegott Hofer - the name is as petty-bourgeois as the person. After a few introductions and several misunderstandings - Hofer is almost thrown out twice - this gets to the core of his concern: After his retirement, he began as a detective specializing in literature to examine Korbes' works for their criminalistic content. He finds a true background for all 22 novels, which he describes in detail for the first two. He also notices that Korbes lets all his murderers escape undetected and that these killers are extremely similar. Hofer's description of the murderers fits perfectly with Korbes' initial description of himself. Finally, Hofer adopts the writer on the head that he committed each of these murders himself. In return for his silence, he wants a pension from Korbes so that he can continue to travel after the admired and participate in his life.

At first Korbes is surprised and taken, admits the murders, but finally clarifies Hofer about the big mistake that can be found in his deliberations: Hofer assumed that he had found something that would not be known to anyone; But for a long time, according to Korbes, nobody has wanted to read inventions. He had to tell true stories to become the successful writer he is and continue to commit murders. According to Korbes, nobody really doubts that he is the real killer, and anyone who tried to drag him to court failed miserably. Korbes explains that the general public wants to experience the excitement, but also the vice and lawlessness through the writers, which everyday life no longer offers and so the writers have to exemplify this life. It goes so far that Korbes receives letters from all kinds of people who offer themselves as material for the next novel.

Finally he pulls out a gun and threatens Hofer because he needs new material and wants to write a radio play. As predicted by Korbes, nobody reacts to Hofer's cries for help, who then rushes out of the window. At the end, Korbes begins to dictate the description he heard at the beginning to his assistant Sebastian, a theology student.
