Aberfan ( Welsh [ˌabɛrˈvan] ) is a mining village in the valley of the River Taff south of Merthyr Tydfil (Welsh Merthyr Tudful ) in South Wales and thus part of the South Wales Valleys . The village attracted international attention with the mining disaster of Aberfan , which resulted in 144 deaths (including 116 children) in 1966.

Aberfan is on the A470 , A4045 and B4273 . On the opposite bank of the river in the municipality of Merthyr Vale is Merthyr Vale (Welsh Ynysowen ) station, which is on the Merthyr Tydfil – Cardiff railway and is served every half hour by trains from Transport for Wales / Trafnidiaeth Cymru .
