Runoff formation

Runoff formation in the narrower sense describes, purely phenomenologically, the relationship between precipitation in the catchment area of a body of water and the amount of water flowing off as a reaction at the area outlet. Particular attention is paid to the forecast of floods , i.e. the maximum water level .

Runoff formation in the broader sense describes all factors influencing runoff , their effect, weight and calculation. Land cover (vegetation) and use, settlement, relief, soil types and hydrogeology have a strong influence . This approach is particularly important for regionalization in water management , geoecology and the development of effective flood protection measures .
