Abibas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abibas (also Abibon and Abibos ) has been the second son of the 1st century Jewish patriarch Gamaliel I since late antiquity . Like his father, he is said to have converted to Christianity. Its historical existence is doubtful.

For the first time, a son of Gamaliel named Abibas comes across in a letter from a presbyter Lucianus in the 5th century during the reign of Emperor Honorius . In the letter, Lucianus describes how Gamaliel revealed to him in several dreams the place of the burial place of St. Stephen and where, according to Gamaliel, the tombs of St. Nicodemus , himself and those of his son Abibas can be found. They are said to have been near Kaphar Gamala , where Lucianus was presbyter. Kaphar Gamala - actually "House of the Camels" - equated Lucianus with "Gamaliels Estate". After a long search and finally finding it in today's Bet Dschemalthe relics were transferred to Jerusalem on December 26, 415 .

The letter of Lucianus is available in numerous reviews , is available in Greek , Armenian , Syrian and Latin versions and is known under the name revelatio Sancti Stephani . The widespread Latin translation was created immediately after the events by Avitus of Bracara , who had inspired Lucianus to write his Greek report. With a preface by Orosius , he sent the letter directly to his community in Bracara Augusta, Spain . Augustine also reports on the discovery of the relics in his De civitate Dei . and Gennadius of Marseilles .

In this narrative, which Theophanes also included in his Chronographia , a baptism of Gamaliel and his son is assumed, but it is not handed down until Photios in the 9th century.

Abibas is venerated as a saint . His feast day is August 3rd in the Catholic Church as the day the bones were found, and December 2nd in the Orthodox Church on the occasion of the transfer to Jerusalem.
