Abida elegantissima is a species of the grain snail (Chondrinidae) from the suborder of the land snail (Stylommatophora). The species has the slimmest housing of all species in the genus Abida . So far it is only known from the type locality in Catalonia .

features

The very slim spindle-shaped case is 8.9 to 10.9 mm high and 2.3 to 2.7 mm wide. The maximum width is reached about half the height of the case. The 10 to 11 turns are moderately curved. The mouth edge is strongly thickened by a white lip, but it is not swell-shaped. The mouth edges are connected to one another in the neck area by a weak callus. The mouth reinforcement consists of + "teeth". The angularis is poorly developed. It can be connected to the spiral, or the folds see separately. There is also a weak subangularis. The parietalis is very low at the front edge, but becomes much higher backwards into the mouth. An infraparietalis is often indicated. In the spindle area, the columellaris is slightly longer than the infracolumellaris; it often reaches the mouth lip. A basalis is formed in the lower part of the mouth. In the palate area, the infrapalatalis, the palatalis inferior and the palatalis superior are developed as double cusps and reach up to the mouth lip. Often a suprapalatalis occurs, but rarely a weak suturalis. In addition, there are usually still some wrinkles on the edge. The last and often the penultimate handle of the case are flattened and narrowed at an angle. The very short base of the case has a weak keel. In the side view, the palatal rim of the mouth is bent slightly backwards. The navel is very tight. The bad apparatus and radula are not known.

Similar species

Abida elegantissima differs from all other Abida species by its very slim, spindle-shaped housing. Abida secale affinis is still the most similar, but this subspecies is distinguished by the reinforcement of the mouth (long Columellaris and, Basalis present).

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is so far only from the Locus typicus in the Coli de Sta. Maria, known as Sierra de Finestras , west of Bañolas , Gerona Province , Catalonia.

Taxonomy

The taxon was set up in 1973 by Edmund Gittenberger as Abida secale elegantissima . He noted that he was not (yet ) aware of any transitional forms to other subspecies of the rye grain snail ( Abida secale ). According to molecular genetic data, Abida elegantissima is the sister taxon of a clade that includes Abida pyrenaearia , Abida gittenbergeri and Abida cylindrica . Bas Kokshoorn and Edmund Gittenberger therefore proposed in 2012 to raise the taxon to the rank of a species.
