Abiram ( Hebrew אֲבִירָם 'ǎvîrām ) is the name of two people mentioned in the Bible .

Son of Elihab

Fall of the Rotte Korach ( fresco in the Sistine Chapel )

In Numbers  16  EU it is reported how a group of 250 respected Israelites, led by Korach , rebelled against Moses . In addition to Korach, the ringleaders included two sons of Eliab, Abiram and Datan (also On, the son of Pelet, who is not mentioned in the following). After the rebels were found to be wrong, the earth finally opened up as a punishment and devoured Abiram and Datan.

The corresponding processes are also described very briefly in the Book of Deuteronomy  (11.6 EU ), in the 106th Psalm  (106.17 EU ) in the Book of Jesus Sirach  (45.18 EU ).

Son of Hiëls

In 1. Kings  16, 34  EU it is reported that Hiël was rebuilding Jericho at the time of King Ahab despite the clear prohibition. According to Joshua's threat of a curse , the laying of the foundation stone for the reconstruction would cost those who undertake this the firstborn son and the setting of the gates would cost the youngest son ( Jos 6,26  EU ). When Hiel began rebuilding Jericho, he died according to prophecy, first his firstborn son Abiram and finally his youngest son Segub. The process described is likely to be an allusion to human sacrifices , as occurred among the Canaanite neighboring peoples of Israel, but which the religion of Israel strictly rejected.
