The abm - working group for handicaps and media e. V. is an association founded in 1983 at the suggestion of the Bavarian State Government , which aims to give people with a disability and their interest groups access to the new media . There are around twenty members of the organizations of the disabled and adult education working at the state or federal level.

In September 1984 television activity began with the broadcast of a regular information program for disabled viewers and their relatives in the Munich cable pilot project. The aim of the programs is to motivate people with a disability to actively participate in social life according to their respective requirements. The association currently organizes regular programs and series on kabel eins , 3sat , Sport1 , local Munich channels and on IN TV .

In 1987 the second department, video library for the hearing impaired, was founded. The task of this facility is to provide the deaf and hard of hearing with an adequate range of subtitled feature films, entertainment films and documentaries.

The third department was the film office “How we live” with a comprehensive film database that is unique in Germany . This institution serves to establish contacts between film producers and those affected as well as their interest groups. Her further tasks are the dissemination of specific films on the problem of the handicapped as well as the further training of handicapped self-help groups and associations in the audiovisual area. The Filmbüro also provides support at film festivals for the disabled at home and abroad.

Every two years the international film festival "How we live!" Is held in the Munich Film Museum. Short films from all over the world will be shown for four days. The filmmakers are invited to Munich so that numerous discussions with the audience are possible. The Bavaria-wide project Lens - Disability, Media and School is another important department of the film office.

The latest project is clear . The editors write texts and translate websites into easy language . Easy language is particularly clear and easily understandable German, short and direct. Content-related, linguistic and graphic barriers of the Internet are broken down. The offer is aimed primarily at people with learning difficulties and language deficits. Many websites are often difficult to understand and confusing for people with learning difficulties.

All texts on the website can also be heard via an audio program. An online dictionary explains difficult terms. Selected texts can also be seen in sign language as a video stream. klartext also subtitles the spoken texts of the television programs of the abm. The project is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Social Affairs.
