Aborea is a game world for the Rolemaster - RPG or a standalone RPG system in the context of the game world Aborea.

Game world

As the official (and so far only) game world for the German version of the role-playing game Rolemaster, Aborea has been the background of various commercial and free adventures since 2007, which already contained more detailed information about the game world. With the appearance of the Aborea complete set in 2011, the world was expanded and for the first time provided with an overview map of the continent of Palea. A more detailed description of the countries and regions eventually learned the continent with the on the GAME presented in 2016 in Essen Atlas, the trio of African scholars describes the game world from the perspective.

The Aborea complete set (also Aborea box or Aborea table role play) is a complete set of rules. The background information on the Aborea game world can be used in parts as a source book for Rolemaster or other role-playing games.

Development and conception

Aborea was released in May 2011 as part of the Role Play Convention in Cologne. It is a typical representative of the classic pen & paper role-playing game and is clearly distinguished from the computer role-playing game by its designation as a table role-playing game . Aborea is specially tailored to younger roleplaying beginners, but sees itself as an age-independent roleplaying game for beginners.

A second, expanded edition of the game was presented in October 2012 at the International Game Days in Essen. In addition to bug fixes, additions (rule clarifications, index) and new rules (e.g. two new professions, level advancement beyond the 20th level), the 2nd edition contains an additional third booklet with ready-to-play adventures (including a version of the Rolemaster adapted to the game -Adenteuers Elisera ), new creatures and ready- made player and non-player characters .

The 3rd edition of the Aborea set of rules, published in December 2014, is a bug-free, largely unchanged new edition of the 2nd edition from 2012.

The 4th edition (November 2016) also corresponds to the previous edition, apart from corrections and additional explanations. Since the 4th edition, the role play has been marketed as an independent, registered brand and game world by Sebastian Witzmann.

In addition to some rule explanations and corrections, the 5th edition (September 2017) was expanded to include an alternative experience point system.

A sixth edition, which has only changed slightly, was presented in May 2018 at the RPC in Cologne.

To improve comprehensibility and clarity, in addition to minor corrections in the 7th edition, the presentation of the lists of sayings has been redesigned.

Control system

Aborea is a class and level-based rule system that takes up some of the core mechanisms of the Rolemaster role-playing game in a very simplified manner. Samples, which are called maneuvers based on Rolemaster , are based on an "exploding over -dice system", in which a ten-sided dice is thrown and, after adding additional throw modifiers, a specified target value must be reached or exceeded.

Character creation and development

Each player character has five attributes that are “bought” according to a point system. These are modified by the elected people. In addition, the five available races (elves, gnomes, halflings, humans and dwarves) grant further advantages and disadvantages, such as: B. the ability to see in the dark or restrictions on the career choice that has the greatest impact on the character's role. There are five professions (thief, warrior, priest, ranger and magician) to choose from, two more (bard and shaman) were added in the second edition of the game (2012) and are also available free of charge on the publisher's website. In addition to special skills, the professions have an influence on the development of hit points and skills. The latter are also bought using a points system before the game starts, with the exact cost depending on the chosen profession. A special feature of character creation and development is the fact that in principle every character can cast spells. The costs and available spells depend on the profession. Spells are learned from spell lists, which can be acquired and increased like other skills. In order to cast spells, a character needs magic points, which he has to develop analogously to skills and spell lists.

In the course of the game, a character collects experience points . When a certain amount is reached, the character rises one level and receives additional hit points, points to increase skills and (depending on the profession) additional skills.

Compatibility with Rolemaster

Since Aborea has some basic concepts in common with the Rolemaster system, both systems are compatible with each other to a certain extent. Due to the greatly simplified rule system, the conversion from Rolemaster to Aborea is usually much easier than the other way around. The fifth adventure, The Cold Death, from the Adventure in Trion series is equipped with play values from both role-playing systems, so that no subsequent conversion is required.
