Abstract Spirit is a funeral doom band founded in 2006 .

history

The Russian funeral doom band Abstract Spirit was founded in 2006 by guitarist Mikhail "Hater" Petrov and keyboardist Alexandra "I. Stellarghost “Fomenko founded by the extreme metal band Twilight Is Mine . Andrey "AK iEzor" Karpukhin from Comatose Vigil joined the project as a drummer and singer . The band's debut album Liquid Dimensions Change was released in 2008 via Solitude Productions . The album received appreciative and laudatory reviews as a solid release in the genre with little innovation. For example, in a review written for the Webzine Metal.de , it was judged that "[t] he class of musicians [...] manifests itself less in extraordinary instrumental performances, but more in the doom and gloom" conveyed by the album. The band continued to cooperate with Solitude Productions. With the second album Tragedy and Weeds from 2009, the band supplemented the funeral-oriented basic structure of the music with disharmoniously incorporated orchestral elements and asymmetrical rhythmic figures. This new orientation, conceived by the band as a reference to Russian funeral ceremonies, polarized the reviews. The third album Horror Vacui , released in 2011, was considered by many reviewers to be the culmination of the group's musical output and an emerging release in the genre at the time of publication. The subsequent Theomorphic Defectiveness from 2013 was judged to be a solid but mediocre release in the genre, which lags behind other popular genre representatives. The band played in 2014 with the split album Escapism with Ennui , released via Moscow Funeral League Records . The album was received positively, while Ennui's performance was often highlighted.

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes the music played by Abstract Spirit as Funeral Doom, which is "intense, threatening, eerie and, above all, majestic". Comparative comparisons are made to Dolorian , Shape of Despair and Ahab . The mood of the music is described as moody or depressed.

According to a review written for the webzine Evilized, the basic structure of the music is simple and minimalist drum set as well as restrained and at the same time described as tough guitar arrangements. With reference to the album Horror Vacui , the music for the Webzine Metal.de is described as “musical darkness” that could score with “extremely gruesome choir passages”. “While the drums slowly create a dense rhythm throughout, the guitars cut their way through the thick clouds of fog just as slowly and loosen it up with a few subliminal melodies. This all sounds pretty fluent and good, but a bit monotony creeps in over the course of the season ”. The music is complemented by keyboard arrangements, "filigree piano melodies, strings or simple acoustic guitars".
