The Mègemont Abbey was a French monastery from 1206 to 1791, first of the Cistercians , from 1611 of the Cistercians in Chassagne , a municipality in the Puy-de-Dôme department .

history

The Count of Auvergne founded the Cistercian monastery Medii-Montis (later Mègemont , German: Mittelberg ) in the area of today's Chassagne in 1206 southwest of Issoire at an altitude of 900 meters . In 1601 the monastery came into the hands of Philibert de Nerestang (soldier and companion of Henry IV, † 1620), who appointed his daughter Françoise de Nérestang as abbess in 1603 and in 1611 ordered an exchange with the Cistercian abbey of La Bénisson-Dieu , which also belonged to him . The current monastery existed until it was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791. An association of the friends of the abbey began restoring the dilapidated remaining buildings, namely the church, from 1992 onwards. It has been a listed building since 1996. Peugniez calls it a "little glory". The monastery was the location of the film The Purple Rivers 2 - The Angels of the Apocalypse .
