history

The Irish monastery of Mount Melleray founded the New Melleray monastery in the United States in 1849 as a possible refuge from the great famine in Ireland ( elevated to an abbey in 1862 ). At the height of the vocations (1961) the monastery had 160 monks. The manufacture of coffins currently contributes to the maintenance of the monastery.
