The Abbey Notre-Dame des Dombes (Latin Abbatia BM de Dumbis ) is a former Cistercian monastery of the strict observance (" Trappists ") in Le Plantay , 40 km northeast of Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the Ain department , in the heart the Dombes countryside .

history

The monastery was founded in 1863 by Trappists at the request of the Bishop of Belley Pierre Gérault de Langalerie . 44 monks from the Aiguebelle monastery moved into the new monastery. The agricultural work of the Trappists led to a more effective agriculture in the place and thus to an improvement of the living conditions of the population.

During the Second World War 35 monks were drafted into the abbey. The abbey was part of the Resistance . It gave shelter to resistance fighters who were hiding in the surrounding wilderness. On May 19, 1944, two monks were murdered by the Germans and others were arrested.

In 1946 the abbey received the insignia of the Knights of the Legion of Honor .

The Groupe des Dombes has existed since 1937 as an ecumenical working group of twenty Protestant and Roman Catholic French-speaking theologians. The group met at the abbey from 1968 to 1997.

After the dissolution of the Trappist convent, the monastery passed to the Chemin Neuf community in 2001 .
