history

The abbey was probably not in the hands of the Cistercians until the 13th century ; However, it existed before that, because the mention of an abbot Ernaud von Blanche Couronne dates back to 1161. Although the architecture of the complex suggests a Cistercian foundation, there is evidence from 1236 that can serve as evidence that the abbey was previously used by another order. Another testimony from 1410 proves that Benedictines were housed there at that time .

In 1767 it was abandoned. From 1871 to 1917 it belonged to the painter Auguste Toulmouche and his wife Marie Lecadre or, after Toulmouche's death in 1890, to his widow alone. During this time, numerous artists worked there. Among other things, Elie Delaunay was a guest there and painted a room. In 1922, the buildings that the Toulmouche couple had redesigned into the region's castle and cultural center were to be used for social purposes; However, the ideas were not implemented and the property was still used for agriculture. During the Second World War , the abbey was temporarily used by the British troops, at times by the Germans, and later by families from Saint-Nazaire who wanted to avoid the bombing raids.

In the 1970s, the Compagnons de Blanche Couronne were founded with the aim of preserving the old monastery for future generations. At this time the buildings were in a desolate condition; for example, the roof of the choir of the church was missing. The community of La Chapelle Launay has been involved in efforts to preserve the complex since 1993, and since 1994 it has been part of the Monuments Historiques.
