Midhat Mursi as-Sayyid 'Umar ( Arabic مدحت مرسي السيد عمر, DMG Midḥat Mursī as-Sayyid ʿUmar ; * April 29, 1953 in Egypt ; † July 28, 2008 in Wasiristan , Pakistan ; aka Abu Chabab al-Masri ) was an Islamist extremist and alleged member of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda in Iraq . As-Sayyid Umar was an explosives expert and poison handling instructor who worked on behalf of al-Qaeda. It is believed that he belonged to the inner circles of Osama bin Laden .

As-Sayyid Umar grew up in northern Egypt and graduated from Alexandria University in 1975 . After the assassination attempt on President Anwar al-Sadat in 1981, he spent some time in prison as one of hundreds of alleged co-conspirators. In the late 1980s he went to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviets.

As-Sayyid Umar ran a training camp for terrorists in Derunta . There he is said to have trained hundreds of mujahideen in the practical use of poisons and explosives. He is also said to have run the az-Zabadi (sour milk, curdled milk) project, a research program for chemical and biological weapons. Since 1999, training manuals containing recipes for primitive chemical and biological weapons have been circulated through him.

He was absent from a rocket attack on his alleged location in the village of Damadola in northwest Pakistan in January 2006. There was a high probability that he was continuing his training activities for al-Qaida terrorists and other extremists. A US $ 5 million bounty has been placed on him by the United States .

As the Pentagon announced on July 28, 2008, al-Sayyid Umar was killed in a missile attack.
