Abu Ubaida al-Banshiri

Abu Ubaida al-Banschiri ( Arabic أبو عبيدة البنشيري, DMG Abū ʿUbaida al-Banšīrī , also Ubaidah al-Banshiri ; actually: Ali Amin ar-Raschidi  /علي أمين الرشيدي / ʿAlī Amīn ar-Rašīdī , also al-Rashidi ; * May 1950 in Cairo ; † May 21, 1996 on Lake Victoria near Mwanza ) was a co-founder of al-Qaeda and first deputy of Osama bin Laden .

Originally an Egyptian policeman, he took part in the anti-Soviet guerrilla in Afghanistan , where he helped found al-Qaeda in August 1988. He was responsible for the entire African network of the organization, especially in Sudan he stayed for a long time. He was killed as a passenger in the sinking of the Bukoba on Lake Victoria.
