history
After the First World War , as part of the literary endeavors of Brazilian Modernismo, intellectuals founded the Sociedade Catarinense de Letras in Florianópolis in 1920 , from which the Academy emerged in 1924. These writers grouped themselves around the monthly Revista de artes e letras . In contrast to other Brazilian literary academies, women writers were also accepted as founding members (Fundadores) and members from the outset. Elected members remain so for life, the number is limited to 40 members.
Today the academy is located in the Centro Integrado de Cultura Professor Henrique da Silva Fontes in Florianópolis.
The ACL should not be confused with the ACLA, the Academia Catarinense de Letras e Artes, founded in 2003 .
