The Academia Engelberg Foundation is a Swiss foundation based in Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden , which has set itself the goal of knowledge to impart and use knowledge. It promotes dialogue about the basic scientific, technological and ecological values ​​of society.

Founding and founder

The foundation was established on September 27, 2001. The founding members of the foundation are the cantons of Uri , Schwyz , Obwalden , Nidwalden , Lucerne , Zug , the municipality of Engelberg and the Swiss Re Group . The foundation is subject to federal supervision.

Foundation purpose

The foundation organizes or supports interdisciplinary events such as the annual conference, follow-up events and projects with an international character. The foundation finances the events through contributions from the public sector (federal government, cantons, municipalities), the economy, from foundations and through the association Friends Academia Engelberg . It is not a charitable foundation, is non-profit and tax-exempt.

The activities are interdisciplinary and bring participants from different nations, cultures and religions together. An emphasis is placed on the contact between the generations and the sexes.

Annual conferences

Every year in Engelberg, under the name "Engelberg Dialogues", a scientific dialogue lasting several days is organized on a topic from the natural, technical and human sciences. Personalities from science, business, politics and society as well as students are invited. The conference is not only intended to spark thematic discussions, but also to present proposals for solutions. In preparation for the annual conferences, students and post-doctoral students develop project studies, which are discussed in depth at the conference.

So far, the following annual topics have been dealt with:

  • 2016: "At the limit"
  • 2017: "Is the Engelbergertaal prepared for climate change?" (no conference, only public evening)

Follow-up events

Special and in-depth events are held on individual annual topics. In April 2005, for example, a follow-up event to the 2003 conference on the topic of “Transparent People” took place.

In November 2005, a “European Research Area and Beyond” meeting was held together with the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research and the ETH Zurich as part of an international discussion platform on science policy.

In August 2008, a follow-up event to the 2007 conference was organized on the subject of the “Challenge of Climate Change”. In January 2012 the seminar “The Environment and the Free Market” was opened in Vaduz with a variety of philosophical questions.

Projects

The results of the discussions at the annual conference will be implemented in projects. With the realization, especially by post-doctoral students and students (YES alumni, Swiss Study Foundation ), awareness of the respective topic is raised. From 2005 to 2008, the International Student Initiative for Action on Climate Change (ISIACC) worked successfully on the project “Stop deforestation” in Latin America . At the beginning of November 2008, as a follow-up project to the 2007 conference, a workshop with members of the international organization Youth Encounter on Sustainability (YES) on the topic of water management took place in Egypt .
