Accademia Pontaniana

The Accademia Pontaniana (also Academia Pontaniana ) is one of the oldest scientific academies in Italy and is based in Naples . Its origins go back to the 15th century.

The exact year the Accademia Pontaniana was founded cannot be stated with any certainty. Its beginnings are dated around the year 1443, when a group of Neapolitan scholars gathered around Antonio Beccadelli (also called "Panormita"). This informal group met in the Castel Nuovo of King Alfonso V of Aragon . After Beccadelli's death, these learned meetings were led by Giovanni Pontano , from which the name Accademia Pontaniana derives. However, this academy cannot look back on a continuous history; rather, there have been repeated interruptions over the centuries. In 1825 it was officially recognized as an academy by royal decree.

Today's Accademia Pontaniana is divided into 5 classes:

  • Scienze Matematiche Pure ed Applicate (Pure and Applied Mathematics)
  • Scienze Naturali (natural sciences)
  • Scienze Morali (morality and politics)
  • Storia, Archeologia e Filologia (history, archeology and philology)
  • Lettere e Belle Arti (Literature and Fine Arts)

Each class consists of 20 full members residing in Naples, 10 full non-resident members and 20 corresponding members.

The Academy publishes a number of publications, including the Atti dell'Accademia Pontaniana as an annual periodical and the Quaderni dell'Accademia Pontaniana as a series of monographs .
