Acanthocardia paucicostata is a species of mussel from the order Cardiida .

fossil valve from the eem . The ribs and thorns are badly worn.

features

The same-valve, only slightly unequal-sided, inflated housing of the nodular cockle becomes fully grown up to 50 mm high. The housing is broadly ovoid in outline, significantly longer than it is high. The anterior dorsal margin stands out clearly, the posterior dorsal margin is slightly less curved than the anterior dorsal margin. The vortex is only slightly in front of the middle of the housing length.

The surface is provided with 16 to 18 wide spaced, strong radial ribs, each of the ribs has a series of short thorns that extend from the center line of the ribs. Initially, the thorns are triangular, close together and give the ribs a serrated appearance. Further out, they are further apart. There they are spatulate and have a slightly recessed top. The ribs cross with strong, concentric wrinkled lines of growth that are most strongly developed in the spaces between the ribs. The edge of the case is strongly serrated, the serration corresponds to the ribs and the spaces in between.

The external ligament is a raised, distinct band on a distinct nymph. In the right valve there are two cardinal teeth, the rear of which is slightly larger than the anterior. There are also two anterior and one posterior lateral teeth. The left valve also has two cardinal teeth, as well as an anterior and a posterior lateral tooth. The surface line is not indented.

The periostracum is thin, the color ranges from whitish to dark yellow / light brown. The shell is thin but firm.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends from the Black Sea and Mediterranean to the Netherlands, and in the south to Morocco and the Canary Islands.

The species lives in sandy soils from shallow water to a depth of about 300 meters.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1834 by George Brettingham Sowerby II as Cardium paucicostatum . Other authors give 1841 as the year of first publication. The species is now part of the genus Acanthocardia JE Gray, 1851.
