Acanthocereus tetragonus is a species of plant in the genus Acanthocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tetragonus is derived from the Greek words tetra- for 'four' and gonia for 'edge' and refers to the mostly square shoots of the species. Acanthocereus tetragonus grows columnar to leaning-climbing, is very variable and reaches heights of 2 to 7 meters. Occasionally a trunk up to 50 centimeters in diameter is formed. The dark green, three to five-edged shoots have a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. Their edges are gently wavy. The gray areoles are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. The needle-like to awl, very variable thorns are brown and gray with age. The one to two central spines are up to 4 centimeters long, the six to eight (sometimes more) radial spines up to 2.5 centimeters long

The flowers are 14 to 20 centimeters long. Your pericarpellet and the flower tube are covered with conspicuous brown woolly, thorny areoles. The elongated, red fruits are edible.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The range of Acanthocereus tetragonus stretches from Florida in the United States to Mexico , includes all of Central America including the Caribbean and extends to Venezuela .

The first description as Cactus tetragonus was published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Pieter Wagenaar Hummelinck placed the species in the genus Acanthocereus in 1938 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
