The Acavidae are a family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The recent representatives are native to Sri Lanka , Madagascar and the Seychelles . A fossil representative has also been described from South America.

features

The housings are medium to very large (fossil up to 20 cm), the shape ranges from highly conical to spherical to strongly flattened. The cases are not very sculpted. The mouth is without teeth, sometimes there is a knot on the spindle. The embryonic housing is very large and comprises up to about 2.5 turns (with a maximum of about 4.5 turns). The jaw is relatively thin and striped vertically ( aulacognath ). In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the penis is relatively short and internally has longitudinal folds. An epiphallus is absent or, if present, relatively short. A flagellum is usually not present either, and if present, relatively short. Some forms also have penile appendages. The penis retractor starts at the very end of the penis. The vagina has no appendix. The stem of the spermatheque is swollen at the base and / or in the middle. It is connected to the spermoviduct by fibers.

Geographical distribution and way of life

Today's representatives of the Caryodidae family are restricted to Sri Lanka, Madagascar and the Seychelles. They live there in damp forests, in Sri Lanka up to a height of about 600 m. The Fossil family is also known from South America.

Systematics

Schileyko (1999) lists six genres. According to Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) the monotypical family Clavatoriidae, which Schileyko (1999) treats as an independent family, is a synonym of Caryodidae. In 1999 Wesselingh and Gittenberger described the fossil genus Pebasiconcha .
