The Caryodidae are a family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). They are restricted to Australia , Tasmania, and New Guinea .
features
The housings are medium to large (up to about 6 cm) and conical to flattened-conical. Some shapes show a greatly enlarged or modified mouth. However, this is without teeth or lamellae. The cases are rather weakly ornamented with spiral stripes or spirally arranged tubercles. In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the penis varies in length and internally has deep, regular longitudinal pits. An epiphallus can be present or absent. A flagellum is usually also missing or is very short (with anoglypta ). The spermatic duct (vas deferens) lies tightly or loosely on the penis. The vagina often has finger-shaped appendages. The stem of the spermathec is relatively long, often connected to the spermoviduct. The basal part of the stem is not or only slightly widened.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The representatives of the family Caryodidae are geographically restricted to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. They live there in the leaf litter of moist forests.
