As early as 1699 it is mentioned that Leipzig citizens celebrate their weddings in the Grünen Schenke (here still with an "e").

On the occasion of the sale of the Grünen Schenke in 1821, the extent of the property is described: The estate with 19¼ acres of land, stables and barns as well as two leased cabbage gardens (Anger was one of the so-called cabbage garden villages) included the coffee, beer and wine bar with large social and billiards room, a large ball, dance and concert hall, a dining room and several social rooms , a lined summer social area with 18 linden trees and a large social and pleasure garden.

In 1825, the landlord of the Grünen Schenke applied for the concession of hospitality, that is, the accommodation of guests with the associated horse-drawn rig. In 1830 the first country team student Kommers was held in the Grüner Schenke and in 1882 the gymnastics club for Anger and Crottendorf was founded. From 1860 a horse bus line coming from Leipzig had its terminal at the Grünen Schenke in Anger.

In 1891 the village buildings of the Grüner Schenke were demolished in order to build multi-storey houses on Breite Straße. Behind it, a new hall was built in 1892 with a large hall for 950 people and a small hall. Now the company was called “Mehnert's concert and ballrooms”, but it was still popularly and officially called the Green Bar again. The new green tavern was known for its lavish decor with ornaments , columns and galleries , mainly in the style of Neo-Baroque to Neo-Rococo .

The ballroom was used for dance events until the 1960s. Particularly popular was the change ball (which probably takes place every Tuesday), where men and women alternated.

After that, the building was only used as a warehouse until 1990. In the following years of vacancy owned by the Leipzig housing and construction company , the building deteriorated so badly that in the end all that remained was demolition. At the end of February / beginning of March 2007 the ruins of the Grünen Schänke (now with “ä”) were finally demolished.

The only thing that reminds you of the Grüne Schänke now is the Grüne Gasse, which used to start directly at the Grünen Schänke, but now only branches off at a distance of about 150 meters from Bernhardstraße.
