History and sights

The settlement of the island of São Miguel took place from 1436 by Portuguese settlers. The place Achadinha was founded in the course of the further development of the island. In 1526 its residents built their first church. After several renovations, most recently in 1782, the church was last extensively restored in 1984.

The eponymous river Ribeira dos Caldeirões flows through the Parque dos Caldeirões . In the park you can see some restored watermills, mostly from the 16th century. Gastronomy, a visitor center with a permanent exhibition on the mills and a shop are located there. A miller does his traditional daily work in one of the mills.

The Museum Núcleo Museológico da Achada , opened in 2006, deals with the history of the municipality.

economy

The community is dominated by agriculture. Potatoes and corn are the most important crops, and livestock is important. The corn is used in particular as feed for cattle breeding.

The municipality is traditionally characterized by high levels of emigration.
