João de Melo

João de Melo (* 1949 in Achadinha in the Azores ) is a Portuguese writer .

Life

At the age of 10 he moved to mainland Portugal and lived in Lisbon from 1967 . From 1971 to 1974 he took part in the colonial war in Angola in a field hospital. This experience had a lasting influence on his literary work. In 1981 he graduated from the Faculty of Humanities in Lisbon as a Romance philologist . He then taught English and French at a school and creative writing and literary studies at a university.

He currently works as a cultural advisor for the Portuguese embassy in Madrid .

He mainly writes novels and short stories, but has also published several textbooks, literary reviews, anthologies, poetry, chronicles and travel literature.
