Achatinella lila is a species of snail belonging to the genus Achatinella , a group of nocturnal, viviparous tree snails thatare endemic to the Hawaiian island of Oahu .

description

Achatinella purple has a case length of 1.7 centimeters and a case diameter of 1.1 centimeters. The left-hand wound housing is egg-shaped-conical, thin-walled and yet solid. It has up to five and a half turns. The shiny surface of the case is dark brown in color on the embryonic passages, and uniformly maroon brown on the body periphery, sometimes with a yellow spot, or with a side maroon band on a yellow background, or with a central green band or two maroon bands along the periphery and along the Seam. The sloping mouth is white or pale purple inside.

Existence and endangerment

The species is endangered in its population. Probable causes of the decline are excessive collection by snail collectors, the stalking by introduced pigs and rats, the clearing of forests and invasive plant species such as Clidemia hirta and Dicranopteris linearis , which prevent the regrowth of the food trees that are indispensable for the snails. The introduced ant species Pheidole megacephala , the garlic gloss snail ( Oxychilus alliarius ) and the rosy wolf snail ( Euglandina rosea ) also hunt Achatinella snails.
