Achille Marozzo (* 1484 ; † around 1550 ) was an Italian fencing master . He was one of the first famous fencing masters from Bologna .

Live and act

His work Opera Nova de Achille Marozzo, Bolognese, Maestro Generale, de l'arte de l'Armi (about "New Work of Achille Marozzo from Bologna, Master of the Arms") appeared in 1536. There Marozzo describes the fight with sword alone and accompanied with a parrying dagger , with a shield , with a cloak wrapped around the arm, with two swords, with a two-handed sword , with polearms and unarmed combat. He also devotes a chapter to the legal issues of a duel . The work was reprinted in 1550 and 1568 and is considered the first fencing book with a relatively large public distribution. It was also the first fencing book that systematically and theoretically devoted itself to fencing. While earlier German fencing books z. B. by Hans Talhoffer only depicted the fighting technique, Marozzo also describes the position of the weapon and various basic positions.

In the 1568 edition, the wood engravings were replaced by copper engravings by Giovanni Battista Fontana and his brother Giulio Fontana.

In the area of the HEMA movement ( HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts / in German also: "Historisches Fechten"), which reconstructs and practices historical European fencing and fighting styles, there are now several associations across Europe that are part of the so-called "Bolognese School" and thus also dedicate to the works of Achille Marozzo. Including in Italy, Austria and Finland.
