Achmad Hasyim Muzadi
Achmad Hasyim Muzadi (born August 8, 1944 in Tuban , East Java ; † March 16, 2017 in Malang , East Java) was an influential Indonesian politician . He was the chairman (tanfidziyah) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, and was succeeded by Said Aqil Siradj .
The Indonesian presidential elections in 2004 were Megawati Soekarnoputri and Hasyim Muzadi 26.2% of the vote but lost in the second round against Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Jusuf Kalla . In 2006 he was one of the signatories of an open letter from Islamic scholars to Pope Benedict XVI. after his Regensburg speech .
