The Achnanthaceae are a family of the Achnanthales within the diatoms (Bacillariophyta). A special feature of this family is that only one of the two boat-like shells ( valvae ) carries a real raphe . The raphenless shell can have a raphen-like structure (pseudoraphe). The cells reach lengths of 5 to a maximum of 100 micrometers. The way of life of this family is benthic , many species have their distribution focus in waters with medium to high salt and often also nutrient content.
This family is named after the genus Achnanthes , to which about 260 fresh and salt water species belong. The most common in freshwater is Achnanthes lanceolata , a Eurocean species that occurs primarily in eutrophic waters.
