Armpit pads

Underarm (axillary well pads, welding sheets or Armblätter) are laundry protection inserts for outerwear that the freshly formed underarm sweat absorb and not those of the clothes can be. Welding sheets are a registered trademark at the German Patent and Trademark Office .

history

The idea of protecting your own clothing from sweat stains originated in the 19th century. The social demands on the appearance of every person have become stricter during this time. The first utility model registrations for the welding sheet (according to Duden : "insert protecting armpit sweat ") were made at the end of the 19th century. They were textile inserts that had to be sewn into the outer clothing. In the early to mid-20th century, these welding reeds were very popular in Germany, as most people couldn't afford a lot of clothes in the difficult times of the financial crisis and in the post-war period . The welding reeds were manufactured industrially in large numbers, including in the Friedländer welding reeds factory in Berlin's Boxhagener Strasse . With the help of sweat reeds, the clothes could be worn a little longer without washing them (the sweat reeds were simply changed). This also extends the life of the outerwear. Over time, this method of protecting yourself from sweat stains and sweat odor has been found to be bothersome and time consuming. In modern society, armpit pads are more likely to be used, which are disposed of in household waste after being worn .

construction

The sweat sheet consists of several textile layers sewn together to absorb sweat under the armpits. The modern armpit pads can be divided into three groups:

  • pads to be stuck to the skin
  • pads to be stuck or hooked onto clothing
  • pads to be placed in clothing.

Initially, batiste or satin , cotton or a tricot fabric were used as the basic textile material. Later on, special, highly absorbent layer materials were created, which consist of a fleece-like top layer, an absorbent core, a laundry protection and an adhesive layer.

application

Armpit pads of whatever type are attached to the armpit area of the clothing (stapled or Velcro fastened ) and primarily serve to protect the clothing from sweat and deodorant stains . Depending on the product structure, odor formation can also be significantly reduced. The skin tolerance of the patch-like pads should be checked before use. A combination with deodorant is difficult here. In addition, the armpit area must be depilated before using the plaster-like pads.
