Eight polonaises

Eight Polonaise Op. III for piano four hands is a piano work by Robert Schumann that was found late and whose composition is dated to 1828. It is part of the musician's youth work.

Karl Geiringer , at that time curator of the collections of the Wiener Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde , discovered the manuscript by Schumann's own hand in 1933. According to his heading, it contained “Eight Polonaisen ” for piano four hands. It is known that Schumann enjoyed playing the four-hand piano very much, but he only wrote a very limited number of piano works for four hands, which made the find particularly significant. It was premiered in the year it was found with a spoken introduction by the editor on the German broadcaster .

The polonaise follow the example of Franz Schubert , but surpass it "in terms of harmonic boldness and tonal sophistication". The young composer can also be recognized in the work on the way to his own style. Schumann was eighteen years old when he composed it.
