Ad major ( Arabic الدور, DMG ad-Dūr ) is an archaeological excavation site in the United Arab Emirates .
The first investigations were carried out here in 1973 by an Iraqi team. A French team led by J.-F. Salles.
Ad major is the largest archaeological site of the Parthian and Sassanid times in the southern region of the Persian Gulf .
Houses and graves from the first century AD were found, next to them a temple and a 25 m by 30 m fortress were excavated. Numerous Roman imports (e.g. glass) prove a lively trade.
Ad major may be the seat of an Arab principality. There were coins that may have been minted here and come from the local kings Abyata and Haritat . The place was inhabited until the fourth century AD, but lost its importance in the third century.
Finds are exhibited in the Al Ain National Museum , among others .
