Adalberto Álvarez

Adalberto Cecilio Álvarez Zayas (born November 22, 1948 in Havana ; † September 1, 2021 ibid) was a Cuban pianist , arranger and band leader of the group " Son 14 " (1978-82) and of Adalberto Álvarez y su Son (since 1984) .

biography

Álvarez grew up in a musical household in Camagüey . At the age of nine he became a member of a youth orchestra that his father directed. When he was 18 years old, it was clear that he would embark on a musical career: he began studying bassoon in Havana at the Escuela Nacional de Arte and until after completing his studies he headed the Orquesta típica del plantel escolar, where he worked with later stars like José Luis Cortés , Joaquín Betancourt and Emiliano Salvador had to do. The Orquesta Rumbavana played his first compositions that became hits (El Son de Adalberto) .

From 1973 to 1977 he taught music and literature at the art school in Camagüey and also directed the Conjunto Avance Juvenil. In 1978 he got the offer to lead the band "Son 14" in Santiago de Cuba . Álvarez accepted the offer and some of his musicians took him with him. First appearances abroad, recordings and the hit A Bayamo en coche followed . Álvarez left the group in 1983 to found a new, more modern group in Havana (Son 14 continued under the direction of Lázaro Rosabal).

After a year of preparation, this group debuted, Adalberto Alvarez y su Son, on 25 February 1984. It was a large cast of trumpets addition to trumpets and a rhythm section of timbales , congas and bongos and piano and Tres , which also repeatedly Synthesizer began . The Tres played Pancho Amat , since 1989 as a permanent member.

He died of COVID-19 in Havana on September 1, 2021 at the age of 72 .
