Adam Herszaft

Adam Herszaft (also Abram, born April 20, 1886 in Warsaw , Russian Empire ; died in 1942 in the Treblinka extermination camp ) was a Polish graphic artist and painter.

Life

Adam Herszaft studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and from 1907 to 1911 in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts . He made several art tours through Italy, France, Germany and Austria. From 1928 he worked in Łódź , from 1935 in Katowice . He wrote art reviews for Polish and Jewish newspapers. He was a member of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

Herszaft was imprisoned by the Germans in the Warsaw ghetto in 1940 ; the Ringelblum archive noted on February 1 of that year that his studio and the rare watercolors had been destroyed. In 1942 he was deported to the Treblinka extermination camp , where he was murdered.

His sister Elżbieta Kowalewska, born in 1905, survived the persecution of the Jews; the Polish actor Krzysztof Kowalewski is a nephew of Herszaft.
