Adam of Kilconquhar

Adam of Kilconquhar, Earl of Carrick (also Adam de Kilconcath ) († 1271 near Akkon ) was a Scottish nobleman.

The exact origin of Adam of Kilconquhar is unclear. Presumably he was a son of Duncan of Kilconquhar , who was a grandson of Duncan, 3rd Earl of Fife . Kilconquhar was a fiefdom of the Bishops of St Andrews, who in turn held it as a fiefdom of the Earls of Fife. In addition, Adam was probably related to the Comyn family. Thanks to this relationship, King Alexander III chose . perhaps Adam from when John Comyn of Badenoch regained political importance in the 1260s. Adam was to marry young Marjorie , Niall's only child , Earl of Carrick and thus his heiress. By marriage he became Iure uxoris Earl of Carrick . Politically, however, he hardly played a role and only occasionally witnessed the king's documents. Like several other Scottish nobles, he took part in the crusade of the English heir to the throne Edward from 1270 . He died of an illness near Acre in 1271 .

Adam had at least one daughter from his marriage to Marjorie, whose name is unknown. She later married Sir Thomas Randolph of Roxburghshire . Adam's widow married Robert de Brus around 1272 . Legend has it that Brus brought her the news of her husband's death when he returned from the crusade. In fact, it was not he, but his father of the same name, Robert de Brus, who took part in the crusade.
