The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him after John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), sixth President of the United States . Adams was now after his tenure as President as a member of Congress significantly involved in the formation of the United States Exploring Expedition led by Charles Wilkes (1838-1842) and the subsequent publication of the scientific results of this expedition.
