Addu-nirari
Map of Syria |
Addu-nirari was a king of Nuḫašše , a small kingdom in what is now northern Syria , who lived only a short time around 1338 BC. Ruled. His predecessor Šarupši had switched to the Hittite side against his overlord Tušratta von Mitanni . Addu-nirari had him murdered and together with Itur-Addu from Mukiš and Aki-Teššup from Nija began a campaign against the Ugarites , who were allied with the Hittite Empire . Šuppiluliuma I. used this attack as a legal pretext for the complete conquest of Syria and set Takib-šarri as the successor king .
Addu-nirari is documented by a Ugaritic text and the Amarna letter EA 51, with which he asks the Egyptian king for support in the fight against the Hittites. According to Wolfgang Helck , the unknown pharaoh is probably Akhenaten , the Italian historian Mario Liverani thinks Tutankhamun is possible.
