The Adolf-Reichwein-Platz is located in downtown Osnabrück . The square was named after the educator, SPD politician and resistance fighter Adolf Reichwein .

location

The Adolf-Reichwein-Platz is located in the southern part of the old town . To the east of the square closes the Kamp, which until a few years ago was also a fallow land created by the war. Redlinger Straße, which is built on small parts, runs north of the square. The Katharinenviertel connects to the east. To the south is the Ledenhof with the square of the same name and surrounding buildings.

Development

To the west and north, the square is lined with houses from different times. Here, a small focus on gastronomy has developed within the city. The traditional Osnabrück restaurant Grüner Jäger is also located here .

history

Originally the square was built on with houses, but these fell victim to the air raids on Osnabrück . After the rubble was removed, the square remained an open space. Before it was redesigned, the space was used as a parking area before parking garages were built nearby for cars.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Kamp and today's Adolf-Reichwein-Platz was redesigned. The Kamp street was swiveled into the Alte Münze and the Neue Osterberger Reihe was created as an extension of the Jürgensort. In 1983, the then Lord Mayor Carl Möller inaugurated the Ochsenbrunnen as the completion of the construction work on the square, and at the same time it was named Adolf-Reichwein-Platz. It was intended as a quiet zone above all for the neighboring retirement home at Leedenhof. Even then, several beer gardens lined the square.

After a nearby bus stop had been named after the square for many years, the decision was made in 2005 to rename this stop to “ Kamp-Promenade / Adolf-Reichwein-Platz”.

After the organization of the Hanseatic Day in 2006 , the play cog was left to the newly designed playground. After twelve years, the Hansekogge suffered from age-related wear, so that it had to be torn down in 2018.

New play ships

After the well-known Hanseatic cog was torn down by the Osnabrück service company (OSB) on May 9, 2018, the service company invested 40,000 euros in the redesign of the playground. On June 22nd, the Mayor of Osnabrück, Wolfgang Griesert , opened the newly designed playground. The new playground ships were named Thor and Häger after a naming competition, based on the TV series Wickie and the strong men .

traffic

The square is bordered to the west and north by the pedestrian streets Alte Münze and Osterberger Reihe. The Kamp, which is used as a bus route, runs to the east. Cars are only allowed to enter the Kampgarage car park in the lower area.
